White Marble Stele, Northern Qi Dynasty, Pair Of Bodhisattvas Avalokiteśvara, 6th Century
Several identical bodhisattva statues are lined up; they are all Kannon bodhisattvas. This style is rare in Japan, but is sometimes found in China. Buddhist statues made of white marble, also called white jade statues, are prized for their beautiful white color and the softness of the stone, which makes them easy to carve. They enjoyed great success, particularly in Hebei Province, China, from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The Northern Qi (Bei Qi) Dynasty reigned in northeastern China from 550 to 577 during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, also known as the Six Dynasties period.
