Painted around 1860-1870, certainly under the influence of Gustave COURBET and probably by one of his collaborators, this majestic breaking wave of course evokes the famous series of "waves" painted by COURBET, particularly in the years 1869-1870, so sought after on the art market.
We find there a characteristic sky broken down into layers in red and blue tones, the partial use of the knife to spread the projections of the wave, the feeling of power released by the sea...
A strong artwork and an imposing format almost a meter long !
