Large Group Of Putti In Carved And Gilded Wood, Venice, “carlo Piccoli Fece… Venezia”, H. 115 Cm
An important decorative group depicting several putti (cherubs) in action, one of them holding a large shell, on a carved rocaille base. A musical putto (playing a wind instrument) and a small dog enliven the lower section. The composition is dynamic and ascending, in the Baroque style, typical of grand Italian decorative arts. The whole is carved and gilded wood, with fine modeling and hair detailing; the gilding shows signs of wear consistent with age (to be specified based on your assessment). The base bears an engraved inscription: “Carlo Piccoli fece … Venezia,” “fece” meaning “made,” followed by an abbreviated year (“ann.”) and “Venezia.” Italian work, probably Venice, late 19th century (Neo-Baroque historicism), to be considered a large ornamental sculpture.
