"the Medici Wrestlers" After The Antique Painting In The Uffizi Gallery In Florence
Artist: école De Lysippe
Terracotta group "The Wrestlers" or "Medici Wrestlers" after the antique, housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The original, likely based on a lost bronze from the Greek school of Lysippos (3rd century BC), was discovered near Rome in 1583. The following year, Cardinal Ferdinand de' Medici acquired it and sent it to Florence. From then on, this major work, depicting two pancratiasts in action (pankration was a sport in the ancient Olympic Games), generated such enthusiasm that many great sculptors copied or drew inspiration from it. Our sculpture, with its remarkable modeling, both in the tension of the muscles and the expression of the faces, is one of those brought back by young men undertaking the "grand tour" (the Roman journey) to complete their education.
