Napoleon III Era Watch Stand, 19th Century Fable, Bronze, Bas-relief, Curiosity, Anticlerical
Antique watch stand dating from the second half of the 19th century. Bronze bas-relief depicting a fable in the medieval style. The scene represents a fox disguised as a monk, holding a book as if preaching, facing a rooster and a hen, in a setting evoking medieval architecture. This allegory is inspired by the fables of the Roman de Renart, where the fox symbolizes cunning and hypocrisy, using the appearance of piety and moralizing discourse to deceive more naive animals. This constitutes a medieval satire denouncing false piety and reminding us to be wary of fine words and virtuous appearances. 26cm high and 23cm wide. Very good condition
