Oil On Canvas, Girl Praying In The Cemetery, French School, Circa 1850–1865
Artist: Dans Le Goût D'octave Tassaert
Oil on canvas depicting a girl praying, gathered in front of a funeral cross. The child, dressed in a dark dress and wearing a modest bonnet, stands with her hands clasped in front of a wooden cross, at the foot of which lies a wreath of flowers, a symbol of mourning and remembrance.
The centered, intimate composition isolates the figure in a deliberately darkened atmosphere. On the left, in the shadows, other wooden crosses can be glimpsed, suggesting a modest cemetery, probably one for the poor. This discreet staging reinforces the social and moral dimension of the subject.
With its melancholic, even melodramatic atmosphere and subject matter, the work is part of the movement initiated by Octave Tassaert, whose influence marked a generation of painters sensitive to themes of social injustice.
This work cannot be attributed to Tassaert, but is likely the work of a follower or workshop, reflecting the spread of this aesthetic.
