Jules Flandrin (1871-1947) Picnic In The Pastures, Corenc. Lyon, Dauphiné, Grenoble
A magnificent, large oil on panel by Jules Flandrin depicting a picnic near cows in a pasture, signed lower left and marked on the back with an old label "Le Grand Tilleul" (The Great Linden Tree). The painting measures 50.5 x 71 cm and 71 x 93 cm including the frame. This is a very beautiful composition by Jules Flandrin, blending a genre scene with a landscape. He paints young women picnicking in a pasture near a herd of cows; in the distance, hills with a haystack can be seen. It is likely that this scene is located near Corenc, where the painter worked extensively and where he lived. His technique is distinctive, with a touch all his own, as is his palette. Jules Léon Flandrin was a French painter and engraver, born on July 9, 1871, in Corenc, where he died on March 25, 1947. He had a partner, Jacqueline Marval, and married Henriette Deloras, with whom he had a son. He is buried in the Saint-Roch cemetery in Grenoble (Isère). In his works, Flandrin sought purity of line and balance of composition. He was a member of the Académie du Bois Joli. An exhibition entitled "Jules Flandrin: A Sensitive Examination" was held in November 2008 at the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché. Works from 1889 to 1914. His works are held at the Grenoble Museum, as well as in numerous other French museums, and also in Tokyo, New York, and Luxembourg. Since 2015, the Musée Dauphinois has included the autochromes from the Jules-Flandrin collection in its holdings. This oil painting is in very good condition, presented in an antique frame with a gilt patina. The work is guaranteed authentic.
