Charles-gabriel Sauvage, Known As Lemire, Cupid Holding A Bow, Bronze, Early 20th Century

Artist: Charles-gabriel Sauvage, Dit Lemire (1741-1827)
An important patinated bronze sculpture depicting a mischievous-looking putto holding a bow, seated on a flower-strewn tree stump, upon which rests his quiver. It stands on an oval wooden base.

Signed “LEMIRE” and bearing the foundry mark of Jollet & Cie, formerly Maison Colin, on the back.

Charles-Gabriel Sauvage, known as Lemire (1741-1827), was a French sculptor who began his career in 1759, joining the modeling workshops of the Niderviller factory. He exhibited at the Salon between 1808 and 1819. Several of his works are now in museums, including "Innocence," commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior and now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours, "The Genius of Poetry" in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, and "Love Putting a String to Its Bow" in the Musée du Louvre.

The base has holes left by wood-boring insects and is broken in two.
