Terracotta Head Of Hermes – R. d'Arly Workshop – France, Early 20th Century
A large hollow terracotta head of Hermes, after an antique Greek-inspired model, in the tradition of Praxitelean types. The face, with its harmonious features, presents a gentle and introspective expression. The hair is rendered in soft, regular curls. The whole piece offers balanced modeling and a beautiful decorative presence. Beneath the base is a molded cartouche bearing the inscription: "TERRE CUITE – R. D'ARLY," a workshop mark attesting to French production from the early 20th century, in the tradition of academic models intended for art studios and drawing schools.
