Large Seascape View From The Port Of Dieppe, Norman School, Circa 1860
Large Seascape – View of the Port of Dieppe – Norman School circa 1860. An important seascape depicting the entrance to the port of Dieppe, probably on the Pollet side, circa mid-19th century (circa 1855–1865). The perfectly balanced horizontal composition is enlivened by fishing boats beached at low tide and a three-masted ship at anchor in the channel. In the background, the chalk cliffs characteristic of the Alabaster Coast stand out. The soft, pearly light, typical of Normandy, along with the academic treatment of perspective, places the work within the tradition of mid-19th-century Norman school seascapes. A large, luminous, and elegant painting, offering a beautiful wall presence and an unusual format for this type of subject. Relined. Original frame and stretcher.
