Early 18th Century Oil Painting On Canvas With Adoration Of Saints
Refined oil painting on canvas, embellished with a carved and gilded wooden frame. The painting depicts a scene of adoration, with the baby Jesus positioned at the top, centrally positioned, half-naked and seated on clouds. Jesus holds a blue sphere in one hand, symbolizing God's dominion over the world, while with the other hand he points his index finger toward the sky, indicating his divine nature. On either side of the scene are two pairs of angels witnessing and participating in the event. Below, in adoration and gazing at Jesus, are two kneeling saints: on the left, Saint Catherine, holding a palm branch, and on the right, Saint Anthony, depicted in a friar's robe, with his hands crossed over his chest and a rope tied to a fragment of wood. This is a painting of great taste and refinement, characterized by a refined stylistic rendering of pictorial details and a skillful use of chiaroscuro, capable of lending a touch of elegance and antiquity to any setting. It is attributed to the Venetian school of the early 18th century.
