Louis XV Queen's Armchair With Back
France, 18th Century
Elegant Louis XV period armchair in natural beechwood, featuring a straight back known as “à la reine”. Unlike the cabriolet back, the à la reine form is upright and more architectural in presence, while still reflecting the graceful fluidity of the Rocaille style.
The backrest and seat are fitted with cane work, adding visual lightness and refinement. The armrests display an elegant curve, terminating in characteristic whiplash (“pied de fouet”) supports, a distinctive element of the Louis XV decorative vocabulary.
The serpentine seat rail and cabriole legs, with their balanced and flowing lines, embody the movement and sophistication typical of mid-18th century French craftsmanship.
A representative example of French Rocaille design, combining comfort, structural elegance, and restrained ornamentation.
