Claude Firmin Aka Le Goy Monclar Avignon Provence Dated 1910 Impressionist Rt1417
Artist: Claude Firmin
Oil on panel depicting the village of Monclar in Avignon in 1910, now a district west of Avignon.
Described as a rural village at the time, with bucolic charm, its Provençal stone houses, the cart in the foreground, and the large haystack.
Beautifully executed with sweeping brushstrokes and warm colors, simulating the mistral wind through the shape and pinkish hue of the clouds, as well as the movement given to the tree's foliage.
This is possibly the painter's house, as Claude Firmin lived at the end of the Monclar road (according to a source from Alauzen's dictionary of Provençal painters).
Signed lower right: CLAUDE FIRMIN.
Dated: 1910.
Condition: Good. Dimensions with frame (more recent): 46 x 35 cm.
Dimensions without frame: 43 x 32 cm.
Weight: 720 grams.
BIOGRAPHY:
Claude Firmin, known as... Goy (meaning "the lame one" in Provençal) (1864-1944) was born and died in Avignon.
A painter of genre scenes, typical subjects, portraits, landscapes, interior scenes, and Orientalist works, he divided his time between Avignon and Paris, living at 54 rue de Seine in the 6th arrondissement. In the capital, he attended the studio of Léon Bonnat, whom the master nicknamed "my best student."
Later, he continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, where he was appointed professor and then director of the school. The Avignon town hall still displays the frescoes commissioned by the city council.
An esteemed painter and teacher, he was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1937 and received numerous awards, including the Calvet Museum Drawing Prize.
His works are listed in the Bénézit, Schurr's "Les Petits Maîtres de la Peinture" (The Little Masters of Painting), and the Alauzen Dictionary of Painters of Provence.
