Theme: In a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, a young English lord and an archaeologist discover the mummy of a young girl of breathtaking beauty. Beside her, a papyrus recounts her story... Thus is revealed the fate of Tahoser, daughter of a high priest of Egypt, who falls in love with a Hebrew. She is ready to share the life of the enslaved people, but Pharaoh, passionately in love with her, has her abducted and offers her power and riches... The drama culminates when, following in the footsteps of Moses, the Hebrews set out for the Red Sea, soon pursued by the monarch at the head of his army. To recreate the splendor of the Nile civilization at its height and to resurrect its lost cities, Théophile Gautier used all the knowledge of nascent Egyptology. He thus gives us one of the first novels about ancient Egypt, as Europe had imagined it since Bonaparte's expedition and Champollion's work.
