Raymonde Georges (20th Century) Still Life With Skull
Artist: Raymonde Georges
Raymonde GEORGES
(20th century)
Still Life with Skull
Oil on canvas
H. 80 cm; W. 60 cm
Signed lower left
circa 1950
This female painter will unfortunately remain unknown for the time being, despite a talent that could not be limited to a single work, which is ours. This hyper-realistic canvas, created around 1950, inevitably brings to mind the compositions of Claude Lepape or Georges Rohner, circulating in the same smooth and polished sphere.
The perfectly applied, vibrant orange background allows objects in unnatural poses, with perfectly cast shadows, to stand out. The branch of flowers hangs upside down, the skull (a horse's?) clings as if by magic against an object that one might recognize as half a fireplace mantel, though this is not certain. Everything is there to create an imbalance, without resorting to a flaw in perspective or a deconstruction of objects as a Cubist might have done.
The identity of this talented woman, from whom many wonderful things could emerge, remains to be discovered. (American black market fund.)
