"crazy Mother" 1970 By Jorge Camacho
Exceptional large oil on canvas by the Cuban painter Jorge Camacho, signed on the back and dated 70. Price: 100 F. In perfect condition. January 25, 1934, Havana, Cuba – March 30, 2011, Paris. Camacho began studying law but abandoned his studies in 1952 to dedicate himself to painting. He traveled to Mexico in 1959 and met the painter José Luis Cuevas. They became friends and embarked on a journey to the heart of Mayan culture. This trip to Mexico allowed him to discover the splendors of pre-Columbian art, especially Mayan art, which would nourish his artistic vision. That same year, after this journey, Jorge Camacho settled in Paris. There, Jorge Camacho reconnected with the sculptor Agustin Cardenas, who introduced him to his friend André Breton in 1961. The artist became a devoted member of Breton's Surrealist group. Camacho's painting is complex: visionary, surrealist, imbued with an elegant esotericism, and always poetic. His passion for pre-Columbian art and ornithology greatly influenced his work: his iconography is unique. It conveys disturbing and unsettling images, bathed in intense, saturated light. The richness of his artistic world led him to illustrate the poems of Jean-Pierre Duprey, Gilbert Lely, and Guy Cabanel. In 1994, his first book of photographs, Cruces de Doñana, was published in Spain. After his trip to Andalusia, he returned to Paris in 1975 and stayed there until his death in 2011, at the age of 77.
