Empire-Style Drop-Front Secretary in Flamed Mahogany – High-Quality Bronze Mounts – Secret Drawers – French Polish – Early 19th Century. An important Empire-style drop-front secretary, early 19th century, crafted in very fine flamed mahogany. The front features detached columns adorned with finely chased and gilded bronze mounts. The mahogany veneer front boasts a strong butterfly-wing grain and is perfectly symmetrical, creating a spectacular decorative effect. It opens with: a drawer in the frieze; a drop-front lined in black leather with a gilt frame; a richly fitted interior with shelves, drawers, and compartments; several secret drawers concealed within the interior, typical of the fine cabinetmaking of the period; a large drawer at the bottom; and an antique black marble top. The traditional French polish finish particularly highlights the depth of the veneer. In very good overall condition, with a sound structure and fine craftsmanship.
