Lucien Fontanarosa (1912-1975) Sleeping Girl Oil on canvas, signed upper right 35 x 110 cm Painter, lithographer, illustrator, Lucien Fontanarosa was born in Paris to Italian parents. He entered Lucien Simon's studio as an independent student in 1932. In 1936, he won the first Grand Prix de Rome. From 1937 to 1939, he resided at the Villa Medici and met André Gide. In 1946, he served on the jury for the Prix de Rome competition; in 1955, he became a member of the Institut de France; and in 1957, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 1963, the City of Paris awarded him its Vermeil Medal. He taught at the École Polytechnique from 1958 to 1972.
