"Pair Of Candlesticks - Gilt Bronze - France - 18th Century "
Pair of Gilt Bronze Candlesticks – Louis XVI Period, circa 1785. A rare and elegant pair of finely chased and mercury-gilded bronze candlesticks from the Louis XVI period, circa 1785. They rest on a circular base adorned with a gadrooned frieze, surmounted by a tripod stem decorated with female heads in classical style, rendered in low relief and linked by foliate scrolls. The twisted central stem supports a candle holder decorated with straight fluting and a row of pearls, typical of the late 18th-century Neoclassical style. The pair perfectly embodies the antique taste prevalent during the reign of Louis XVI, marked by a return to Greco-Roman models. The fineness of the chasing, the balance of proportions, and the quality of the mercury gilding attest to Parisian craftsmanship of great skill. In very good condition. Beautiful original gilding, luminous and well preserved. French work, Louis XVI period, circa 1785. Dimensions: Height: 21.5 cm Base diameter: 9.5 cm A refined and decorative pair, ideal on a period console, chest of drawers or mantelpiece.
