Compiègne - Solid Silver Tulip Cup - Master Goldsmith - Jl Besnard, Admitted In 1731
A very fine solid silver cup, first half of the 18th century, tulip-shaped with a slightly flared neck, resting on a molded circular foot with egg-and-dart friezes. The body, divided into two registers by a raised band, is decorated with wide reserves of matte silver and richly chased friezes. The engraving consists of foliate scrolls, cartouches engraved with crosshatching, and flower buds populated by birds; the lower section is decorated with lambrequins and lanceolate leaves. The smooth neck contrasts with the ornamental richness of the body and highlights the exceptional quality of the matte silver. Maker: Jean-Louis Besnard, admitted to Compiègne in 1731. Guard in 1738 and 1768. Initials JLB, a crowned dolphin, two grains. Date letter: crowned B. Height: 10 cm / 3.94 in. Diameter at the rim: 8.8 cm / 3.46 in. Sterling silver weight: 140 g. Minor signs of wear, cup in very good condition.
