Hst Around The Concarneau Market Halls Mr. Grun

The old market halls of Concarneau, Place de la Mairie, oil on canvas signed by Maurice Grun. In the foreground, a Breton woman crosses the square. In the background, shops, including a café. The shadows of the trees in the Place de la Mairie are cast on the ground in the lower right, where Maurice Grun placed his signature. Maurice Grun was born in Réval (now Tallinn, Estonia) in 1870 and died in Saint-Cloud in 1947. A Russian painter, he became a French citizen in 1910. He studied under Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant, and Tony Robert Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1890 to 1893. He traveled to the United States and Brazil, where he taught at the newly founded Escola de Belas Artes in Salvador de Bahia. Upon returning to France, he stayed in Paris but also visited Concarneau on several occasions, where he painted this view.
