A 19th-century mulberry wood rattle with a hazel handle. This idiophone musical instrument, dating back to the Middle Ages, is also called a brouan or tartuleuil, or jarre in Luxembourg, and is still widespread throughout Europe today. Simple in design and use, it is a popular instrument and also a toy for children.
