This tapestry has already been cleaned in our workshop. Leaves and Rain – Jean Lurçat, Aubusson tapestry, circa 1961. In this generously sized tapestry, Jean Lurçat unfolds a dreamlike and vibrant universe, true to the renewal he breathed into Aubusson tapestry in the 20th century. Against a nocturnal background of a deep, almost black blue, the scene is organized like a poetic vision suspended between heaven and earth. In the center, a large butterfly with fully spread wings immediately captures the eye. Its powerfully stylized graphic motifs blend luminous greens, incandescent reds, vibrant yellows, and touches of white. The wings, resembling masks or symbolic faces, seem to vibrate with an inner energy. The insect's body extends upwards in an elongated, almost totemic form, which accentuates the verticality of the composition. Around him, pale green raindrops fall diagonally, punctuating the space like a musical score. Irregularly shaped stars in shades of green and red dot the dark sky, creating a cosmic atmosphere. The whole evokes a transfigured nature, where the elements—rain, stars, insects—converse in symbolic harmony. In the lower section, sinuous branches in ochre and gold hues rise, bearing large, stylized leaves with vibrant red outlines. The design of the leaves, bordered by bold black lines, recalls Lurçat's characteristic graphic style: a structured, almost heraldic decorative language that combines formal simplicity with ornamental richness. The work perfectly illustrates Lurçat's vision: a mythical nature, organized into strong symbols and stark contrasts, where pure color and line assert the expressive power of the tapestry. Leaves and Rain thus appears as a poetic celebration of the natural cycle, sublimated by the technical mastery and symbolic force characteristic of the Aubusson tradition.
