Delt Earthenware Vase Decorated With Europeans. Holland, Late 17th Century. Artist's Mark.
Artist: Delft
A very large octagonal Dutch earthenware vase, likely from the Delft kilns. The underglaze cobalt blue decoration depicts prominent European figures in a setting of mountains, trees, flowers, and clouds, the whole rendered in the style of late Ming and transitional Chinese porcelain or Genroku-era Japanese porcelain. Such a lively decoration of Europeans, and of such high quality, is extremely rare. The lower part of the vase is broken by a large crack, and a piece of clay is missing at the point of impact. It has not undergone any restoration. Dutch work from the late 17th century. A painted mark underneath appears to be a cursive E, probably the artist's name. Very large, 63 cm.
