Francisco De Herrera The Elder (1588-1564), Follower Of - Christ Before Caiaphas
Oil on canvas. The canvas was restretched in the mid-20th century by its former owner. This work, which depicts a scene from the Passion, displays a complex stylistic hybridity, characteristic of the transition to naturalism in the Iberian Peninsula. A marked Flemish influence is evident, particularly in the descriptive detail of certain textile elements and in the spatial compartmentalization, reminiscent of engravings from the Antwerp School widely circulated in Spain. This northern base is imbued with Italian Mannerist tendencies, perceptible in the use of directional lighting that seeks dramatic contrast and in the anatomy of certain figures, whose expressive gestures and foreshortening suggest a familiarity with post-Tridentine compositional solutions imported from the artistic centers of the Italian Peninsula. The technical execution, characterized by a bold brushstroke and a modeling of volumes that prioritizes formal solidity over idealization, places the work within the circle of Francisco de Herrera the Elder. The configuration of the faces, with their strong features and almost raw expressiveness, as well as the treatment of the folds of the clothing – which acquire a geometric rigidity – are defining characteristics of the Sevillian master's style. This stylistic crystallization, which blends graphic archaism with the nascent energy of the early Baroque, supports the hypothesis of an attribution to a collaborator or direct disciple of his workshop, working during this pivotal phase of Andalusian painting where Herrera's precise drawing gradually gives way to greater freedom of expression. - Image dimensions without frame: 65.5 x 61 cm / 75 x 70 cm with exclusive custom-made frame.
