Ancient French Romanesque Head In Stone, Red Sandstone, 11th–12th Century

Ancient carved stone head, French, Romanesque period, circa 11th–12th century.

Carved in red ferruginous sandstone, this sculptural fragment depicts a stylised human face with almond-shaped eyes, straight nose, simplified ears and a banded treatment of the hair, all characteristic of Romanesque architectural sculpture.

Originally part of an architectural element, most likely a corbel or modillion from a church or monastic building. The reverse is roughly worked, as expected for an architectural fragment, with a flat break at the base.

The surface shows natural weathering and wear consistent with long exterior exposure.

Height: 9 cm.

Good condition, commensurate with age and type.
