"Lemerle Charpentier, Bronze Worker In Paris In The 19th Century, Cartel-type Clock In The Rocaille Style"
This solid gilt bronze clock is a true jewel of craftsmanship and history. Its movement, stamped with the prestigious Maison Lemerle-Charpentier mark, testifies to exceptional expertise. Founded in 1834 by Nicolas-Germain Charpentier, this Parisian firm quickly established itself as a leader in the manufacture of bronze furniture and art pieces. Initially located at 6 rue d'Orléans in the Marais district, then at 8 rue Charlot from 1853, it garnered accolades at the Expositions of Industrial Products (silver medal in 1849) and the Universal Expositions (first-class medal in 1855 and 1862). His creations, inspired by the Louis XIV and Louis XVI styles, as well as his collaborations with renowned sculptors such as Jean-François-Théodore Gechter, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, and Louis-Charles Buhot, left their mark on the era. The firm continued its rise under the direction of Jean-Antoine Lemerle, a partner since 1855 and successor to his father-in-law. His talent was recognized at the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition with a gold medal, notably for a monumental Louis XVI wall clock, designed in collaboration with the sculptor Eugène Piat. This work, crafted from marble, gilt bronze, and silvered bronze, was hailed as one of the marvels of the Exhibition, admired for its originality and technical prowess. This cartel clock in the Rococo style, which we present here, is a perfect example of the elegance and quality of the Lemerle-Charpentier firm's creations. Its high-quality gilt bronze and remarkable state of preservation make it a rare and sought-after piece. It is, of course, in perfect working order, although a service by a specialist restorer is always recommended to ensure its longevity. Measuring 44 cm high and 34 cm wide, this clock will enhance your interior with its majestic presence and historical heritage. A timeless piece, combining art, history, and elegance, to be discovered without delay.
