Strasbourg, Lithograph by E. Simon Fils, 1836; folio, frontispiece + 39 + 40 + 40 lithographs, half-bound in bottle-green calf with corners, spine decorated with five raised bands. Collection of three entirely lithographed volumes. A complete treatise on scripts of all kinds, compiled by Jean Midolle, artist, writer, and calligrapher active in Strasbourg between 1830 and 1850. A monumental inventory, entirely lithographed in black (three plates with color), based on his highly virtuosic pen drawings. Plates numbered in all three volumes. The first volume lists Eastern and Western scripts. The second volume is a collection of early compositions, drawings, letters, and texts. Many plates are devoted to Napoleon, religion, and writers. The final volume includes alphabets and text models in the various scripts mentioned in the title, illustrated primers, fanciful alphabets, various numerals, and concludes with the Diabolical Alphabet. A very rare and comprehensive collection.
