Saint Joachim and Saint Anne present Mary to the Trinity
Olio on alabaster
in 9,84x12,20
The painting depicts a theologically complex scene. Saints Joachim and Anne present their newborn daughter, the Virgin Mary, to the Holy Trinity, emphasizing her consecration to God from birth. Surrounding them are cherubs holding a scroll inscribed with the words “Nativitas tua, Virgo Maria, gaudium universo mundo” (“Your Nativity, O Virgin Mother of God, has brought joy to the whole world”). This phrase is taken from an antiphon of the Vespers celebrated on the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, on September 8th. A print of this painting exists, engraved in the same orientation, created by the Flemish painter and engraver Philip Fruytiers. This delicate and rare painting on alabaster is also attributed to Fruytiers. As noted in the lengthy inscription at the bottom of the engraving, the work was created within a Jesuit context and under the direct patronage of the Order. Stylistically, it is worth comparing this painting with Fruytiers’ altarpiece The Triumph of Saint Angelus in the church of Gistel, Belgium. The elegant painter and engraver from Antwerp distinguished himself particularly for his small format works, often executed on paper or parchment using tempera and watercolor. These works like the one under discussion are characterized by a delicate, meticulous brushstroke and an extraordinary attention to detail.
