Object description :

" Antoine-louis Barye (parigi, 24 Settembre 1796 – Parigi, 25 Giugno 1875)"
THE GALLERY OFFERS BRONZE BY PARISIAN MASTER ANIMALIER A.L. BARYE DEPICTING JAGUAR DEVOURING A HARE Barye contrasts the powerful, muscular physique of the jaguar with the more detailed, inert body of the terrified hare. The feline's ears are pressed against its head, and its features are contorted with fury as it prepares to devour its prey's entrails. At the Paris Salon of 1850, "Jaguar Devouring a Hare" was exhibited alongside "Lapith Fighting a Centaur," one work representing the artist's more romantic side and the other his more classical side. Both sculptures were acclaimed masterpieces. Critic Théophile Gautier observed of this sculpture: "The mere reproduction of nature does not constitute art; [Barye] enlarges his animal subjects, simplifying them, idealizing them, and stylizing them in a bold, energetic, and crude manner that makes him the Michelangelo of the Menagerie. A variant of this sculpture by French modernist Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was recently acquired by the Baltimore Museum of Art." FRENCH FOUNDRY, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY W 32CM X H 16CM
