"Large 18th Century Italian Carved Alabaster Borghese Vase."
This finely carved, sectioned vase is decorated with a lively Dionysian procession that extends across its entire surface. At the center of the scene is Dionysus (the Roman Bacchus), calm and slightly idealised, contrasting with the exuberant energy of his followers. The figures, arranged with density yet harmony, their flowing drapery and entwined bodies emphasize the movement, revelry, and sensuality associated with the God of wine. In good condition considering its age, with an old repair to the fluted base. Superb purity of color. Reacts wonderfully to natural light & illumination.
