Large Biedermeier Extendable Dining Table With Armchairs, 19th Century
Biedermeier dining room set comprising a large oval extending table and its matching armchairs. The table features a walnut veneer top with a finely executed radial “sunburst” pattern, framed by a delicate inlaid border. This treatment highlights the natural grain of the wood, in keeping with the Biedermeier aesthetic, where the quality of the veneer takes precedence over applied ornament.
It rests on a central turned and molded column, accented with a metal ring, and terminating in a quadripartite base with metal-capped feet.
Thanks to its oval shape and central pedestal, the table maintains an elegant presence while remaining practical for everyday use, reminiscent of a large center table found in 19th-century bourgeois interiors. It can be extended into a full dining or reception table with the addition of four leaves, reaching a total length of 420 cm and comfortably seating the ten armchairs of the set.
The armchairs, made in the same wood and finish as the table, display a restrained and well-balanced design. Their slightly curved rectangular backrests and subtly angular armrests reflect the Biedermeier style, emphasizing clarity of form and harmonious proportions. The front legs are fitted with metal caps, echoing the metal elements of the table base. The seats and backrests are upholstered in a raspberry-toned velvet with a crocodile-style pattern, adding a decorative contrast while preserving the overall elegance of the ensemble.
