Pierre Cazaubon : "apollo Musagete"
Pierre Alfred Noël CAZAUBON (1885-1979): "Apollo Musagetes," a slightly off-white terracotta tondo with a shellac finish, probably used as a mold for a ceramic piece.
Diameter 25 cm, monogrammed on the back.
The mounting notch being broken, the previous owner secured it with a wire and plaster to allow for hanging.
This renowned sculptor from Pau, who benefited from commissions and purchases from the French state during his lifetime, is now paradoxically little known. A regular exhibitor at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, he was frequently awarded prizes for his powerful yet elegant works, of which our bas-relief "Apollo Leading the Muses to the Sound of His Lyre" is an excellent example.
