Maurice Georges Poncelet : "the Traveling Musicians"
Maurice Georges Poncelet (1897-1978): "The Traveling Musicians", oil on canvas mounted on a 50 X 73 cm stretcher, without frame.
In need of complete reattachment and with significant missing parts, dirty and annotated "study" and traces of signature. Near the resting donkey, a woman breastfeeds her child while turning towards a violinist in a pink leotard remembering Picasso...
The Artist was contemporary with all the movements of Modern Art to which he contributed with canvases that were both colorful and muted in a touch that is reminiscent of many artists of the School of Paris such as Edmond Heuzé with whom he shared a taste for the circus or Dietz Edzard.
Familiar with the Salons, he was always favored by collectors but his death in 1978 made him fall somewhat into oblivion and he deserves to be rediscovered.
