Large Accolay Lamp By Georges Pelletier, 1970s

Artist: Georges Pelletier
Important lamp by Georges Pelletier for the Accolay workshops, dating from the 1970s, in perfect condition. The stylized ceramic base with a floral "cépamine" medallion (supporting a large cylindrical lampshade) diffuses light through its openings. "Cépamine," a hybrid material between glass and resin with inclusions of preserved foliage, flowers, and butterflies, creating a soothing ambiance, is a technique invented by the Accolay workshops. This rare lamp benefits from three light sources (one in the base), thus diffusing light throughout the room. It is signed "Accolay" under the base. The Accolay workshops in Burgundy were founded in October 1945 by four enthusiasts: Louis Aragon (turner), Rodet (painter), Slavik Palais (sculptor), and André Boutaud (salesman for the workshops). They were students of the renowned ceramist KOSTANDA (of the CAPRON movement and others from the VALLAURIS school). Over the years, the workshops flourished with the arrival of LOTSHINE, BANACHANT, and AUGER, as well as the Canadian GIAROUSSO (in 1960). In 1964, the group adopted the name Créations et Exposition de Poteries d'Art Moderne (Creations and Exhibition of Modern Art Pottery). Some pieces were then noticed by the House of Christian DIOR, and buttons reserved for Haute Couture were created in these workshops for the "NEW YORK" Collection. The atypical shapes and innovative decorations of the pieces were appreciated by a new clientele until the group's demise in 1989. The lamp is electrically functional and shows no damage (no cracks, chips, or repairs) to the entire piece, including the lampshade (which is particularly rare).
