Table à La Tronchin Or Architect's Table Circa 1780

A beautiful and rare architect's table, known as a "Tronchin table" in reference to the physician Théodore Tronchin, who recommended for his patients the use of a table with an adjustable top, allowing the user to sit or stand while resting, thus relieving back pain.
Made of mahogany, it rests on four tapered legs ending in fluting and opens with a drawer in the front.
The drawer reveals a leather-lined shelf, which is further concealed within a compartment for ink and sand.
The leather-covered top unfolds to form a writing surface and is raised by an ingenious mechanism, allowing adjustment of the height and orientation.
On each side of the table is a leather-covered pull-out slide.
