Sassanid Ring In Solid Gold
Solid gold Sasanian ring with its original carnelian intaglio, Iran, 4th–6th century AD, a remarkable example of imperial glyptic art preserved in its original configuration. A rare and elegant antique solid gold ring, attributable to the period of the last Persian imperial dynasty, known as the Sasanian dynasty (224–651 AD), testifying to the refinement of goldsmithing and glyptic art in the late antique Iranian world. The ring is set with a high-quality carnelian intaglio, finely engraved with a stylized symbolic motif of apotropaic character, typical of Sasanian production. The slightly convex setting holds a perfectly fitted cabochon, mounted on an antique gold band featuring a small lateral beaded granule, a characteristic detail of settings from this period. The piece displays remarkable coherence between the engraved stone and its setting, suggesting a homogeneous creation and continuous use, probably as a status or personal protection ring.
