Antique Chinese Export Black Lacquer Wall Display Shelves, Dragons, Foochow, C19th–early C20th
Antique Chinese export wall display shelves in black lacquer, richly decorated in gilt with dragons, phoenixes, clouds, and auspicious motifs, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
The set comprises three elements: two vertical rectangular wall panels and a central shaped panel, each fitted with projecting shelves and supports. These were originally intended for the display of porcelain and precious works of art. The lacquer decoration, executed in gold with subtle red highlights on a deep black ground, is lively and finely detailed, showing traditional mythological imagery associated with protection, power, and good fortune.
The reverse bears the original Sang Hing Lung trade stamp, identifying the piece as an export work from Foochow (modern-day Fuzhou). Sang Hing Lung was a Foochow-based exporter of lacquered wares, active during the late 19th and early 20th century in supplying the Western market. Foochow was one of the principal centres of lacquer production for export during this period.
Height: 56 cm
Good condition, with minor wear to the lacquer consistent with age and use. The structure remains sound, and the decorative surfaces are well preserved.
A striking and decorative example of Chinese export lacquerware, combining strong visual presence with documented commercial origin.
