"Jac Lem 1914-1995"
Jacques Lemonnier, known as JAC LEM, 1914-1995. The Bay of Ecalgrain. Oil on hardboard, signed lower right. 50 x 61 cm. Born in Le Vast at the Ferme des Bois on July 25, 1914. He claimed to have been a student of Maurice Pigeon, another artist from Le Vast. In his childhood, he observed Pigeon at work, thus acquiring a foundation in his craft through imitation and mimicry. Jac Lem had a gift; a self-taught painter, he began as a landscape artist before the war, when he was a young draftsman at the Cherbourg arsenal. A bold creator, he executed rapid, powerful, and intuitive collages and owned a gallery of paintings in Cherbourg.
