Louis Thévenet was a self-taught Belgian painter and an atypical figure of the Brabant Fauvism movement.
Born in Bruges in 1874, he grew up in Brussels into a family of artists. His father, Pierre Thévenet, is a renowned painter.
After trying his hand at various odd jobs, he discovered his artistic
vocation thanks to the “Le Labeur” circle and the support of painter Auguste Oleffe.
In 1903, he began exhibiting in Brussels and joined the Brabant Fauvist movement.
His work is characterized by intimate interiors, still lifes, and scenes from everyday life, painted in warm, luminous colors.
Thévenet settled in Hal during the First World War and spent the last years of his life there, painting the streets, cafés, and houses of the town.
