"Reliquary Painting With A Nail From The True Cross – Late 18th Century "
Four wax Agnus Dei allow us to date this beautiful piece. One bears the arms of Clement IV, Pope from 1769 to 1774. The supposed Holy Nail, in the center, has a beautiful Latin inscription. He is surrounded by eight (the number of Christ) Holy Martyrs from the early centuries.
These include Saints Isidore, Generous, Maximus, Innocent, Honestus, Olimpos, Desiderius, and Lawrence, amidst a rich arrangement of gold and silver thread, pearls, and multicolored glass beads.
On the back, like the five wounds of Christ, are five wax seals from a German congregation.
Dimensions: 28 cm x 35 cm.
Good condition.
