"Shirvan Rug. Caucasus. Late 19th Century. 142 X 88 Cm"
The first image that came to mind when I saw this delightful rug was something like a pastry: a blueberry tartlet with a shortcrust pastry and a heart of Bourbon vanilla-flavored pastry cream. That gives you an idea of how captivated and admiring I was. But let's get back to the rug itself! It's a Shirvan rug from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. The piece dates from the late 19th century and is in exquisite condition. The natural, vegetal hues are rich and saturated across the central field of Caucasian midnight blue. The star motifs are remarkably precise, elegant, and refined. The central field is framed by two very beautiful borders. One features delightful animal motifs, while the other is composed of a succession and interweaving of stylized geometric patterns to stunning effect. Deep indigo blue tones, orangey ochre, champagne, and ecru... all in a harmonious and exquisitely controlled blend. This design, this composition, these hues, these motifs, the format—everything is geared towards creating an exceptional piece. Woven and knotted wool upon wool. The weave is exquisite, fine and tightly woven. The pile is short. The piece is supple and light, like a cloud! In near-miraculous condition. Late 19th century, circa 1880. Dimensions: 142 x 88 cm.
