The natural banding of the stone—a dramatic white stripe crossing the grey field—adds depth and visual intrigue to this ancient gem. The lion, symbol of strength, courage, and nobility throughout the Mediterranean world, is rendered with remarkable naturalism and vitality. Presence of globular elements of Etruscan influence.

The substantial 19th-century gold mount is a work of art in itself, featuring elaborate openwork shoulders with pierced foliate designs and four decorative granules framing the bezel. This style reflects the Renaissance Revival taste prevalent among Grand Tour collectors who sought to honour ancient gems with settings worthy of their heritage.
