Large Ceramic Tondo In Orientalist Style, Portrait Of A Moor (circle Of Emile Signol)
Artist: Entourage D’emile Signol
This large ceramic tondo, in the Orientalist vein of 19th-century art, depicts a portrait of a Moor against a yellow background, casting a defiant glance over his shoulder at the viewer. The harsh light sculpts this angular face, framed by a dark green turban. The pose and the treatment of light are reminiscent of the royal portraits painted by Émile Signol for Louis-Philippe at Versailles, particularly the portrait of Dagobert I. The portrait may have been inspired by a painting by Signol, and the signature “ES” a tribute from the master ceramist to the painter. Our portrait is encircled by an enameled frieze of raised Orientalist motifs.
