He came from a family of artists (his father, Lion Schulman, was also a painter and art dealer) and became a prominent figure in the Laren School, a group of painters based around the village of Laren, known for their landscapes and rural scenes painted en plein air. Many of his works depict the Dutch landscape in different seasons, but his winter scenes are particularly popular — with snow-covered villages, fields and farms bathed in soft light.
