Known as 'Peppino', meaning 'Cucumber', Jose Benlliure y Ortiz was a Spanish painter born in Rome in 1884. The artist was a son of prominent Spanish painter José Benlliure y Gil, who established his successful career in Rome and went on to be director of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts, as well as being trained by Joaquín Sorolla. In 1919, Jose Benlliure y Ortiz held an exhibition of 45 paintings in the halls of the Theatre Royal in Madrid, as a tribute to Rome, his birthplace. This highly accomplished artist went on to become appointed as an honorary presidents of the Cercle de Belles Arts in Valencia, as well as becoming the director of the Museu de Belles Arts de Valencia.
