"Chintz, Persian Or Indian Block-printed Fabrics - Oberkampf Factory (?) Circa 1820-1830"
Circa 1820-1830, France. A pair of fabrics known as Persian, chintz, or Indian prints, printed using woodblocks and dating from the early 19th century. The manufacturer is unidentified but possibly Oberkampf in Jouy-en-Josas, or from a renowned Alsatian manufacturer. Made of very fine Indian cotton of the purest white, printed using woodblocks in the style of 18th-century Persian prints, with nine plant-based colors, including green obtained by brushing and layering indigo over yellow! The exotic design features extravagant flowering vegetation punctuated by crested birds of paradise. The fabric has retained its original glazed finish and has probably never been exposed to water or UV light! This illustrates the profound aesthetic impact of the vibrant polychromy of Indian prints on our ancestors in the 17th and 18th centuries. No stains or holes. Exceptional state of preservation. Each panel is identical; they are offered at €680 each or €1200 for both. Dimensions: each panel measures 198 cm x 85 cm, seamless.
