Théodore Jacques Ralli, Oil On Canvas, Signed, River Landscape
Artist: Théodore Jacques Ralli
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1904 by Théodore Ralli Scaranmanga, known as Théodore Jacques Ralli (1852–1909), depicting a river landscape enlivened by boats, vegetated banks, and reflections. This work belongs to a period outside his Orientalist phase, corresponding to the years when Ralli, settled in France after his stays in Turkey and Egypt, embraced a freer approach to landscape painting.
A softening of the brushstrokes and a marked interest in the effects of light and atmosphere are evident, reflecting an Impressionist sensibility, while retaining the rigor of drawing inherited from his academic training. A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Ralli remained committed to the structure of composition, but here he moved away from overly polished painting in favor of a direct observation of the subject.
This type of landscape testifies to the evolution of his pictorial language at the turn of the 20th century. Framed artwork.
