Carved And Gilded Wooden Mirror In The Louis XVI-empress Style, 19th Century
This large and beautiful mirror is a fine example of the Napoleon III style (Second Empire), characterized by a pronounced taste for eclecticism and opulence, here largely inspired by the Louis XVI style, revived by Empress Eugénie. The rectangular mirror was likely intended for placement in an entryway, above a mantelpiece, or in a sideboard in a living room or dining room. The frame is made of veneered wood. The gilding has a beautiful patina that highlights the relief. The decoration is typical of the "Empress" style, an 18th-century reinterpretation: The mirror is crowned with a superb central medallion in the form of a laurel or oak wreath, tied with a ribbon. It is flanked by symmetrical scrolling foliage. The four spandrels are marked by projecting squares adorned with rosettes. These corners are surmounted at the top and terminated at the bottom by small ornaments in the form of spinning tops or acanthus leaves. The frame itself is carved with repetitive motifs, including beaded friezes and heart-shaped patterns, which add rhythm and texture to the whole. Its simple, rectilinear design combined with the richness of the gilding makes it a choice piece, a classic of the 19th century, ideal for a beautiful interior. Dimensions:173,5 x 124,5 cm
