Auguste Mengin - Painted Plates With Enamel Experiments
Two plates painted by Charles Auguste Mengin.
The larger plate, 25 cm in diameter, is signed Mengin.A. It depicts a scene in the medieval style. Illustrations by Mengin in this same neo-Gothic or troubadour style can be found in the collection of the Maison Victor Hugo in Jersey.
The smaller plate, 20 cm in diameter, unsigned but from the same provenance, depicts Queen Zenobia after a drawing by Michelangelo. It has color tests for the glaze on the back, an interesting testimony of Mengin's artistic practice as a sculptor, painter, and ceramicist.
In very good overall condition.
